Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide derived from the naturally occurring glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is an incretin hormone, naturally secreted in the gastrointestinal tract, that stimulates insulin and suppresses glucagon secretion depending on glucose levels. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, semaglutide was developed based on the body of knowledge gained from the development of liraglutide, but designed to have a longer half-life. The structural differences between GLP-1 and semaglutide reduce enzymatic degradation and promote albumin-binding, both of which increase the half-life of the peptide. Research Studies: Tachibana T.
